To the origin, this knife has an extraordinary history because it reproduces the form of an airship. It is the work of the cutler Louis GARNIER, born in Nogent in 1881 and deceased in 1950.
On October 20, 1917, the ZEPPELIN " L49" armed by German is constrained to be posed close to Nogent. The enemy crew is made prisoner. Quickly warned crowd runs to see this strange airship. they did not hesitate, little of time after, to put it in parts. Louis GARNIER to the site goes notebook of sketch in hand and, once returned in his workshop, develops a closing knife in form of Zeppelin.
He will manufacture two specimens of them; ten the centimetres and three much smallest. Part of this production is currently visible to the Pelletier Room (Museum of the Cutlery of Nogent).
The mechanism of these knives is not without pointing out parts manufactured in England during the XIXème century. Mr. GARNIER thus had adapted and reactualized an old form by putting it with the last style. This is thus in this spirit that Robert BEILLONNET took again this concept and presents it to the current hour while as well as possible trying to respect the know-how of these predecessors.
Robert BEILLONNET : Twice awarded on of "Meilleur Ouvrier de France", he designs and produces regional knives (Le Thiers, Laguiole, Yssingeaux, etc). His work includes exceptional one-off handcrafted knives, repairs, and replicas of 18th and 19th century models. Robert BEILLONNET also designs and produces prototypes for industrial manufacture. |
