The Coutellerie Cognet Manufacture has been making knives in Thiers, the cutlery capital of the world, since 1835. The then manager was Antoine Cognet. Its knives with perfect finishes explain the success of the brand.
To find new outlets after the First World War, Gaspard Cognet dit Gaston created in 1929 the famous Douk Douk®. This knife takes its name from the Melanesian spirit engraved on its handle. The Melanesian market looked interesting at the time but will ultimately be disappointing and this knife will experience unprecedented success in North Africa. Indeed for the local customers, fine connoisseur, the Douk Douk® combines superior blade quality and low price. In Algeria it has become the national pocket knife. The blade is so sharp that they use this knife as a razor. Its ultra flat shape allows it to be concealed so well that it becomes a weapon for some. The French Administration ends up considering the Douk Douk as "war material" and the importation of these knives into Algeria will be prohibited. The stocks will be seized and returned to the military as pocket knives. This knife, so well known on the entire African continent and even in certain Pygmy tribes, used by backpackers, the military, merchants, this Douk Douk® knife was then unknown in France.
The Manufacture de Coutellerie was taken over by Guy Cognet and then by his son.
Pierre Cognet, 4th generation, is a founding member of the Brotherhood of the LE THIERS® knife created in 1994 by cutlers and knife enthusiasts.
The creation of LE THIERS® by P. Cognet further roots the company in the legend of Thiers cutlery and confirms the family passion since Robin Cognet has joined his father in recent years.
